            The Academic Cell has been in existence since 1987. The main objective and functioning of the Academic Cell is to facilitate continuing Medical Education in the speciality of Oncology. The Institute imparts training in various discipline sub specialties of Oncology to Post Graduate, Undergraduates, internees, nurses and Scientists of allied Sciences from various Medical/Paramedical Institutions in the State / Country.


            The Cytopathology Laboratory of the Institute has been accredited by the Indian Academy of Cytologists for training in Diagnostic services.


Courses offered:


            In recognition of the facilities available at the Institute for Diagnosis, treatment and Research on Cancer patients, various Post Graduate, Undergraduates, and Diploma courses are offered and these courses are affiliated / Recognized by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Medical Council of India and National Board of Examinations. The Cytopathology Laboratory of the Institute has been accredited by the Indian Academy of Cytologists for training in Diagnostic services.

      The selection of students for the Superspeciality courses D.M and M.Ch, Post Graduate course in Radiotherapy and Diploma in Radiotherapy (DMRT) are done on All  India basis of common entrance test conducted by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Selection of students for other courses are done by the Institute by Walk-in-Interview for DNB course and based on the results of entrance test (conducted by Institute ) and interviews for Undergraduate courses in Allied Sciences. All Post Graduate (including Super Speciality), Diploma (DMRT and DNB) students are paid monthly stipend as per the rules of State Govt. / DNB Board.


      In addition to the above Diploma in Oncology Nursing has been started recently (Jan 2009) and the selection of students for 15 seats is in progress. This course is approved by Govt. of Karnataka and Karnataka Nursing Council. Clearance from Indian Nursing Council is awaited. Proposals have been submitted to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences to start M.Sc. Nursing (Medical Surgical), Fellowship in Oncology (Gynaec Oncology, Onco Pathology, Paediatric Oncology, Head & Neck Oncology and Palliative Care).


      The departments of Pathology, Biochemistry,  Microbiology and     Radiation Physics are recognized for Ph.d  programmes under RGUHS. Many students are pursuing for Ph.D in these departments.



      In  addition, the Government of India has recognized this Institute as one of the Institute of National Excellence and has been deputing Medical persons for W.H.O. fellowships for higher education and training in cancer treatment and research. It has among its  primary objectives,  the promotion of a high standard  patient care and aims to provide top notch integrated training programmes in the Oncological Sciences. The Institute has initiated a  programme of  Professional education, technology and expertise transfer  through short term education/training programmes for under graduates, post graduate students from medical colleges/institutions/ nursing colleges of Karnataka as well as from other states of the country. In additions students pursuing Post Graduate studies I various disciplines such has Biotechnology, Nursing, Social Work etc. are posted short term for Orientation classes / as Observers / trainees to the respective departments. The Doctors and Health Workers of DHFWS, Govt. of Karnataka  are also trained by the institute with the main objective of imparting knowledge in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in early stage in their  respective areas. The Academic Cell liaisons these activities between the Institute and other Institutions (WHO) / Medical Colleges / Colleges.
