The Department of Microbiology came into existence in 1980, to cater to the diagnosis of infections in cancer patients. The department has grown from a simple bacteriology department to a full fledged Microbiology Department capable of diagnosing majority of opportunistic infections seen in these immunocompromised patients using the latest molecular tools.

Apart from routine microbiological equipments such as microscopes, incubators, laminar flow cabinets, centrifuges, hot air ovens and refrigerators, autoclaves; additional equipments available include, ultra low temperature freezers (-800C), CO 2 incubator, electrophoresis equipment, thermal cycler, ELISA reader, refrigerated super speed centrifuge, fluorescence microscope and inverted phase contrast microscope, water purification system, image capture and documentation facilities, lyophiliser, liquid nitrogen cylinders.

Clinical Services:

Diagnosis of microbial infections in cancer patients. The types of investigations include bacterial isolation, viral antibody and antigen detection, detecting viral, fungal and parasitic DNA.

On an average the department receives 2799 number of samples for cultures and 23628 number of samples for serology per year

Diagnostic tests for the following Micro organisms:

·              Detection of opportunistic protozoa: Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, Isospora,    Blastocystis, Microsporidium

Research / Contributions:

The department has been recognized for Ph.D under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
